co-occuring disorders
Many other mental health conditions can occur alongside substance use issues. When this happens, the term often used by clinicians is “Co-occuring Disorders” which is a way of saying that a person has a struggle with mental health issues AND ALSO a substance use condition. Sometimes there are special circumstances in which some substances can really play a role in causing mental health disorders. Stimulants and anxiety have a difficult relationship where one can easily worsen the other. Alcohol and depression have a real love hate relationship. Psychadelics like LSD and Ketamine have a difficult relationship wherein measured careful doses, the research points to benefits, but in uncontrolled doses it can cause psychosis.
